Welcome to I am growNman
This isn't just a podcast. It's my life's work.
This video library documents my intentional pursuit of becoming the best version of myself. Every episode captures the lessons, successes, failures, questions, and conversations that are shaping me into a better husband, father, leader, and man.
My greatest goal isn't fame or recognition.
It's to become the husband my wife deserves, the father my children can always depend on, and an example that inspires others to pursue intentional growth.
Along this journey, I'm committed to mastering one of the most powerful skills a person can possess—communication. I believe the way we communicate shapes our relationships, our families, our communities, and ultimately, our lives.
I know this work will never be finished.
That's the point.
Growth isn't a destination. It's a lifelong commitment.
If you're willing to challenge your thinking, embrace accountability, and become better than you were yesterday, I invite you to walk with me.
Together, let's become better on purpose.
Be Great on Purpose.

Welcome Back And New Mindset
SPEAKER_00What up though, and welcome back to I'm Growing Man, Sheman John D in the building. Well, I've been uh on summer vacation but working every day, and my first official day back work was yesterday. The summer was very productive. I didn't get the rest that I thought I was gonna get, but I was way more productive than I could have ever imagined. So blessed to be able to start this school year in a different mindset. Uh last year was my first time in this area as an administrator, and it was definitely a different experience from the ones I've had in my past. But this experience has been completely life-changing. I'm learning the ins and outs of everything. And I don't know if y'all know, I've been in education. If not 24, 25 years, something like that. But I'm saying that being in it where now my intentions are different, I want to become really good at what I do. So I'm just finding ways to improve every single day. And I feel like when I get to the point where I figured out the constant routine, uh, I'll be able to say the right words to inspire my teachers to bring the best out of them so we can reach these students. Because at the end of the day, if we don't help them realize how important they are
Work Hard Now Play Later
SPEAKER_00or help them understand how important learning is, they're gonna have a tough life. There's a student that reached out to me today, and I told him, I was like, you better work hard now and play later. Because if you play now, you're gonna work harder later. And I really believe that people don't understand that just because your parents don't know everything don't mean you can't get more information. And I know that's a lot of pressure on kids. But sometimes these kids don't have any other option. And I would, I would prefer them to realize as early as possible that they don't have to fall for the distractions that men have fallen for before them. And I know kids are supposed to be protective if these kids are having kids at a young age. Who's protecting anybody? We have to change the message. Students are exposed to a little bit of everything. And I don't have a problem with being exposed to a little bit of everything, but you got to have parents to help them understand all of that. And you know, some of the parents don't even understand how significant it is. And that's the reason why I work on communication, because these moments I have with these students, I want to give them any and everything I can because they could get taken out of the school. They could move. And I don't want their time to be wasted while they were with me. I really take this thing seriously. That's the reason why I work on the communication part so much, because I told people, I don't want to waste your time when I talk to you. If we're talking and we're not benefiting from it, why are we wasting our time? We are too important to be wasting our time. So I can't control what I can't control. But if I get better at education, I can reduce the chance of me wasting somebody else's time. Don't understand how serious that is, but time is the mess, the most precious currency in the world. How you use it. Or don't. You can't get it back. By me intentionally working on communication, it allows my conversations to be worth more to not only me, but to the person I'm talking to. Because I want them to walk away feeling like I'm glad I was crazy to think. But to me, I feel like, why wouldn't you want to like leave an impression on somebody? You could help change somebody's life. You know, some people may not want to do that. But being in the field of education, I feel like I wanted people to change my life. I can't, I can't really say that I had that teacher that changed my life. Outside of a first grade teacher, that's Carolyn Libers. I don't know what she, I can't say I know what she did for me, but I do know she followed me a long time throughout my life. I came back and actually the story where my life changed because a teacher said this to me. Could have said it, but I wasn't digesting it or understand this long. That's what I only want to do. Help change somebody's life for the better. Fall in love with learning, appreciating the mistake so you can get a better solution next time. Some of us are making the same mistakes over. That's what the generation before us said about us. This generation is different. Everybody's gonna be different. But where do you play in making it better? If you my age, you're supposed to be creating or working on something to leave this world better than you found it. And I feel like a lot of us don't realize how important we are because we're not creating anything. We're really just going to work, family time. And you could be creating wonderful moments with your family. But your day job, you probably don't like it. Even if you do
Why Master Teachers Change Neighborhoods
SPEAKER_00like, you're probably just making somebody else's dream come true. That's why it's so dope to work in service, because it's to help people. And if you can appreciate helping people, it's a different gratification. That's why I don't under well, I do understand. Black folks don't go into education. I could be wrong, but this is my observation. When I was growing up, everybody was told to be a lawyer, a doctor, an engineer, because this was gonna make the. I see so many people go do that and they don't even like it. They got all them student loans for something they didn't like because they was going to chase this. Most people don't go into education because in their mind they're supposed to make more money than educators. Not realizing that if you knew how to handle your money, you would you would be okay. But we are distracted by the things we believe we want. Distracted like that, you're not gonna be interested in trying to change your kid's life. The people that go into education, they probably don't worry about money. And if you don't worry about money, you probably should go in education. Those of you that, how about this? If you're really good in education, you're gonna make way more money than your teacher's salary. Most teachers don't make that because they're not that good. And I know that's gonna ruffle some feather. But I'm saying, if you're really good at your craft, somebody's gonna ask you to do some tutoring, some training, something for you to make some money. If you're really good, you're gonna be able to tell them how much you want. And that's what I want. I want to somehow get people to understand that education needs some masters in their craft to turn around neighborhoods that are not exposed to a lot other than what they know. You go to school to become an educator and you get that pedagogy, you get that experience, and you go into the classroom and you work on your craft every day, you will, you could possibly change a whole generation of people. But the master of the craft is very necessary. I can't say I've met anybody who's mastered their craft in education. And if I have, I never saw them in their craft. Like as far as teaching. Yeah, like I've I've met some great teachers, but maybe I only saw them perform a couple times, but I wasn't interested in understanding what the master of the craft. Now, like it's like I want to inspire people to like become the coldest. Because when you become the coldest, you don't worry about money. Other people's kids remembering the impact you had on them that could possibly change their family. That's how your name lives on. People worried about the legacy of your kids. Imagine having another family member, another family outside of yours talk about you because you changed the trajectory of their life. That is the ultimate gratification. I'm trying to be that. I I work on it every day. And if I can motivate these kids to be great on purpose, their family's gonna change. And I'm not saying you're not gonna have your hiccups, but once you start truly believing in yourself, you stop doing, you stop making bad decisions on purpose. People that make bad decisions on purpose don't realize how important they are, or they're so stuck on that they're right, but they're following the wrong message. No lie. I've never met a person that won consequence over a reward. Everybody's trying to win, but if you play the wrong way, that consequence is second guess your decision making. And you know, I'm close to being 50 in another year and a half. There are people older than me, younger than me making poor decisions that's that could affect so many different people. And if you don't start making better decisions, it's gonna be one of those moments where
Knowing Better Takes A Skill
SPEAKER_00you're like, why didn't anybody tell me? So the point of the podcast is not to tell you what to do, but tell you you can do better. You know when people used to say, if you know better, you do better. It's incorrect. You gotta know how to do the better. A lot of people don't know how to do the better. And if you don't know how to ask questions for help, you're going to just do things your way. Almost like drinking alcohol, it gives you these superpowers because it allows you to talk a little more, be a little more social, causes you to sometimes be a little more aggressive. It gives you this courage that you can't do because you use this excuse, like this liquid that gives you an excuse, like if you mess up, you just say I'm drunk. You have to make better decisions sober. We are really making poor decisions without any type of influence in our body. We're just making bad decisions because we think that's what we're supposed to be doing. Now, I do want to reiterate if I'm offending anybody, this message is not for you because I come in peace. I'm only talking to those who need it. And I know I'm feeling like
When Your Message Becomes A Business
SPEAKER_00the moments are coming. And I do want to share this. I do believe that podcasts is gonna blow up pretty soon. And I'm so excited because more and more men are talking to me sidebar, and I gotta figure out what I'm gonna do to like try to create some type of revenue from this because people want to talk to me one-on-one, and I don't have a problem with that at all. Uh, the problem is, is I don't know how to charge people. And when I say the people that are interested, it's people that make little to no money or make a whole lot of money. And I just wanted to make sense. And I'll tell you this, I didn't want to charge anybody, but my principal told me, I think I said this in the last one, Mr. Lewis, that's your time. You can't give people your time for free. You got a family, you work, you got your personal life. If they want your message for free, they can go to your YouTube. And I was like, that makes sense. But it still didn't get past, I couldn't get past the idea that I don't know how uh figure that part out where it makes sense. It's almost like I gotta So if any of you guys that listen uh got some ideas, oh help me out. If it works out, maybe I'll take care of you. Uh I've been looking for an agent. I got a couple people that been trying to flip to become an agent. It's probably not the best thing to do, but I know they have me in their best interest worry about looking over. They might not be as good because they don't, they're completely green, taking advantage. Time gets closer to needing those things. You know, uh, hopefully in the next few weeks to months, I got something grinding. It's about that time, and I'm I've just been having fun. Like that's the reason why I say I could do this for the rest of my life, because my message comes from my heart. Different option of increasing their quality of life. Anybody that's talking like this, where are you gonna get it? You have to believe you're that important to make better decisions. Remember, I used to use this excuse, I'm better than my father. That was a pretty low bar. It's not like he didn't do everything he could, like he like he could, like he didn't try to hurt me, but some of his information that he gave was probably not the best information for anybody. However, I learned, you know, like in order to do better, you have to look for the better and practice the better. And you do it long enough, you'll be better. Hopefully, some of these messages will reach to like some of the youth. Because that's that's well, like I said, this message is for anybody who's ready to receive it. But I would love for you to pay attention and realize how important they are, and start learning, asking for help. A lot of times our emotions prevent us from getting what we deserve because we don't like the way we feel. So I said our parents were supposed to protect us from certain things. But your parents only know so much. If you got a couple of parents that would fully engage in raising you, that's a blessing. But I'm talking about those that don't have that option, hoping that some of these
Build Routines That Prove You Matter
SPEAKER_00messages hit them. So great on purpose requires an intent, a plan. You tell a kid he can't go to the FBA, but he has a routine and he does it every day. That's so crazy. There's a plan for everything. So I'm just challenging all of y'all. I want y'all to find ways to get better. Four or five things, make them a part of your life. Over the course of years, you'll accumulate so much time in it where it's gonna legitimately create the best version of your life that you didn't even know you could do because you didn't, you weren't practicing that. Just imagine if you practice on yourself every day, what would you what would you become? And I'm I'm praying that you guys take yourself seriously. Check it out. Whoever's listening to this, you are the most important person. I believe that. But it don't matter. Now, let's say if you said, I do believe I'm important, what are you doing to verify that you're important? Now you take care of your business, you're getting your schoolwork done, are you going to work on time? Are you going over and beyond? If you're not going over and beyond on a consistent basis, you can't create something special. If you only do what you're supposed to do every day, you you you average. I'm trying to prevent people from falling to the trap of comfortability. Because when you average, you don't get what you deserve. You get what average people get: a whole bunch of complaining. You can cash that complaint in and say, I'm not working hard enough. I could be doing more. And don't look for people to be giving you shout outs or saying, you know, patting you on the back. You have to believe you can do it without it. You don't need a team of people humping you up saying, Oh, you're doing the right thing. You have to believe you're just doing the right thing because they'll come out. A lot of them don't say anything because they're trying to figure themselves out. And people be looking for cheerleaders from people who need cheerleaders. So, work on yourself, do it on purpose. You become this version that makes you proud. And you don't need anybody because you be like, Yeah, I did that. Because you can't become cold unless you put the work in. And then when you become cold, you already know you put the work in, so it's just like it's part of that part of your life. I'm about to pick up my uncle. He don't
GATA And Final Challenge
SPEAKER_00worry about anything you can't control. G-A-T-A. Get after that action, or that action will get after you. Be great on purpose.
